Ice in your margarita? Sorry, that costs extra.

Drink receipt from Loon Lake Lodge in IndianapolisFollowing a volunteer retreat in Indianapolis in May, the team headed to a restaurant for dinner. The Loon Lake Lodge is the type of place that has moose tracks embedded in the concrete floor.

Later, I noticed a strange charge on the receipt. The margarita was $6.95. But the “rocks” were an additional $1.50. Somehow, getting ice in the cold drink cost an extra 21%.

This makes no sense, considering that all margaritas have ice in them. And on-the-rocks is less work for the bartender than a frozen margarita. I emailed the restaurant last month for their side of the story but they never responded. UPDATE: Since I drafted this post in July…the restaurant has gone out of business.

Unbundling your products can be a good way to be transparent. But if your computer is charging extra for something unusual, maybe you don’t want to trumpet that…

Have you ever come across a strange item on a receipt?

In my experience there’s usually more tequila in Margaritas on the rocks then there is in frozen Margaritas so my guess is that they were charging for the extra tequila as a result of the rocks and not the ice itself.

Probably could have chosen a better presentation for the receipt though, I will admit.

@Alex: Good insight! After working in New York for several years, I was used to drinks being fairly expensive, so I didn’t think twice about the $9 price while I was signing the receipt.
