Marketing gimmick to generate leads: Free hot dogs at the yard sale

Yard sale sign, with free hot dogs

Clever yard sale advertising

Sometimes you need to try a marketing gimmick to get new leads in a highly competitive market… like this “free hot dogs” sign for a yard sale in Raleigh’s Boylan Heights neighborhood.

If you’re a prospective customer — driving around with cash in your pocket — and you can go to any yard sale this weekend, wouldn’t you want to check out the one with free food first?

Great idea.

Didn’t work for my open house though..not free hot dogs, but free cookies, water and other such stuff.

Kate and Dan, thanks for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear the free cookies didn’t bring in prospective buyers — what kind of cookies were they?

We planned our yard sale for what ended up being the hottest day of the year this summer… so “ice cold lemonade” was promptly added to pre-sale flyers! As cash-lucrative as some yard sales end up being, I think it’s a great investment to bring in the perspective buyers. Plus, I think it gives you the impression that the sale hosts/hostesses are going to be more fun and friendly than not!
