Client: Whippany Railway Museum
Where: Morris County, New Jersey
Challenge: A historic preservation non-profit with “cash only” ticket sales struggled to connect with younger customers in the age of iPhones and credit cards, while having no budget for capital-intensive marketing investments.
Solution: Launched e-commerce website to handle online ticketing (hosted via third-party vendor, to minimize startup costs) and created email marketing program to drive event sales.
Result: Profits went up 38% in the first year, while simultaneously accelerating revenue collection, shortening ticket office lines, and reducing administrative overhead.
My Role: Selected ticketing vendor and worked
When: 2007-2009 with board members to configure and manage the online ticket system, which minimized startup costs. Created email marketing templates and wrote copy for first year’s content. Trained volunteers on doing email marketing and successfully delegated the process to new team.
“Karl is unique in his constant drive to make things better — more profitable, more efficient, more customer-friendly. He transformed the marketing at the Whippany Railway Museum since he started working with us in 2007.
With Karl as the driving force behind launching our new on-line ticketing system, our customers are happier and our revenues are no longer weather-dependent. He also helped us figure out which advertisements were working and which ads weren’t.
Besides his “hard” skills, Karl is good at communicating to people how they’ll benefit from working on projects that help the entire organization, which helps get people onboard.
I met many people in my former 42-year business career, from running a six-person small business to managing a very large, multi-branch office supply company. I wish I had a person like Karl on my team before I retired. If I needed to hire a tech-savvy, results-oriented marketer today, I would hire Karl Sakas without hesitation.”
