The Sakas Collection of Railroad Art

My art collection shows railroads as a part of day-to-day life—for railroad workers, passengers, and members of the community.

I prioritize works with strong storytelling—people and machines moving, waiting, or otherwise experiencing everyday life.

The collection’s current name is Between the Lines: People and Places in Railroad Art. Works currently span 1880 to 2026. Mediums include oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, photographs, and mixed media.

The collection includes works by both well-known and under-appreciated artists. It features original paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs by Reginald Marsh, Raphael Soyer, O. Winston Link, Howard Fogg, Dennis Ziemienski, Cecil Crosley Bell, Chris Oldham, and others.

I’ve created a digital catalog of key works, including images, metadata, and curatorial essays. The 190+ page catalog currently reflects a majority of the objects in my collection—including more than 90% of the unique originals. In the future, I’ll continue cataloging all prints and fine art photographs.

My approach includes using archival materials, UV protection, climate control, specialty insurance, and cloud-based digital provenance documentation.

I intend to bequeath a core collection of 40–60 objects to the Center for Railroad Photography & Art (CRP&A). The organization announced this future acquisition at the 2026 Conversations conference in Indianapolis.
